Beach Manager – Full-Time Seasonal Job Description

Reports to: Designated LPPOA Board Member Last Revision Date: 1/30/2023

Type of Position: Full-time, Seasonal Position

Begins first weekend of June, Ends Labor Day, may be extended to weekends in

September. May require some trainings and meetings prior to June

Hours: Rotating shifts, Mon thru Sunday, 10am – 7pm

Up to 40 hours per week, weekend and holiday shifts are required

Pay Rate: Starts at $8715 stipend for the season, paid in 6 equal installments on the 1 st and 15 th of the month

Who we are - Organizational Summary:

Lake Parsippany is a scenic man-made lake community managed by the Lake Parsippany

Property Owners Association (LPPOA); a non-profit organization managed by a volunteer board of directors. Our 2200 home community operates 1 or more of 3 swimming beaches as part of our approximately 1-mile diameter freshwater lake. Other common activities on the water include sailing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. We primarily use one beach (Hoffmann Beach) for swimming. From time to time, our other beaches may be used for community events, rented parties and more. The Beach Manager is responsible to maintain safety during these events.

Our beach is unique in that the beach staff not only watches the water but is responsible for promoting community and family fun by planning and conducting recreational, arts, and crafts activities for all age groups throughout the swimming season.

Your overall job - Purpose

The primary responsibility as a beach manager is to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the LPPOA’s aquatic facilities and functions. Candidates must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. This person will need to be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and possess the ability to work with diverse populations. The beach manager must be able to manage the beach/aquatic staff in enforcing LPPOA policies and be able to communicate effectively why policies are in place. The successful Candidate will also plan and execute with the help of the Beach/aquatic staff, community recreational activities and events associated with the beaches to promote community engagement, neighborly camaraderie, increased utilization of the facilities.

What you will do - Job Responsibilities:

Supervision of lifeguards, to support operations of beaches, and facilities.

Closing or not opening beaches due to inclement weather conditions after consulting with Moderator.

Closing any and all bathing areas whenever such action is deemed necessary in the interest of public safety after consulting with the lifeguards.

Consulting with the Board Member Liaison on any safety concerns, problems, or questions.

Supervises swimming activities at our waterfront beaches and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.

Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces beach regulations and water safety policies.

Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.

Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required.

Inspects beach and beach facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.

Supervises and assists in cleaning the beach and related facilities and equipment, assists with water tests and with records and charts of water tests and records of accidents as directed.

Supervises classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed.

Schedules staff to ensure appropriate coverage and safe beach environment when competing programs/priorities require use of aquatic facilities.

Develops and conducts of a variety of recreational programs for members of all ages.

Maintains an awareness of other boating and water activities occurring on the larger lake responding to emergency situations, as necessary.

Show-up for your scheduled shifts as scheduled, on-time, properly attired and equipped for work (approved bathing suit, t-shirt, hat, whistle, clothes appropriate to the weather, sunscreen).

Manage the sale and stock of light snacks and ice cream

Record daily member attendance and participation numbers, and complete daily cleaning assignments.

Provide and conduct regular in-service trainings.

Provide a welcoming environment for all patrons.

Document any incidents and/or injuries.

Maintain a clean and tidy workspace.

Perform other duties as assigned.

What you need to have - Qualifications/Skills:

Supervisory experience, especially with teenagers.

Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at the beach and lake to determine any potential dangers or hazards

Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of the visitors and other staff

Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions

Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety

Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies

Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services

Naturally outgoing personality with good communications skills

Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.

Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while on duty.

Ability to multi-task attention to several activities at one time.

The Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements You Need

Minimum of 6 months of related work or volunteer experience in management and supervision of customer service, childcare and water safety.

Certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, or equivalent

American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, or equivalent

American Red Cross Standard First Aid, or equivalent

At least 60 credits towards a college degree. Preference will be given to candidates whose education is towards Recreation sciences, Physical education, community development or related fields
